At Star Wars Celebration 2017 in Orlando, we got our very first glimpse at Star Wars: The Last Jedi. There was also a new post revealed and a brief panel discussion with Kathleen Kennedy, Rhian Johnson, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill and Kelly Marie Tran. Here is a brief breakdown of what insight the teaser gave us.
The trailer showed us Rey in training with Luke on Ahch-To, the planet The Force Awakens ended on. Shots of Rey practising with her lightsaber and levitating pebbles using the Force are glimpsed. Daisy Ridley said on the panel:
“Rey has a certain expectation as to what she might be getting from Luke and what that might entail. And as a lot of people might know, it’s difficult when you meet your heroes because it might not be what you expect.”
This is all the more apparent given Luke’s final line in the teaser “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” Luke is obviously questioning his faith, likely related to the events we partly witnessed in The Force Awakens force vision. We see a similar shot in this teaser with Luke on his knees beside R2-D2 in front of a blazing building – potentially his Jedi Academy.
We also get a shot of what appears to be the Journal of the Whills, an ancient book that chronicled the history of the galaxy. The books come from the Ancient Order of the Whills, a Force-connected group that lore says predate the Jedi and the Sith. You might recall that Rogue One’s Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus belonged to the order called the Guardians of the Whills on Jedha, they protected the Temple of the Kyber on the planet.
We see a glimpse of Finn, presumably still in the Resistance base, recovering from the wounds inflicted by Kylo Ren in some kind of medical tank. We don’t have much information on Poe, other than him being aboard a Resistance cruiser that’s under attack, concluding with what appears to be the destruction of his X-Wing. The teaser also gives us brief glimpses of General Leia viewing a hologram map, Kylo Ren looking menacing with his new scar holding his frayed lightsaber and Captain Phasma flanked by First Order Stormtroopers marching through a fiery wreckage. Expect space battles!
One of the coolest shots of the teaser is that of Resistance fighters (looking a lot like B-Wings) gliding across a salt dune towards, what we assume are First Order AT-AT walkers on the new planet called Crait. The website Making Star Wars covered this sometime ago and described the new AT-AT walkers. We also get our first sight of new Resistance A-Wings since the Return of the Jedi.
Director Rian Johnson confirmed Rey’s parents will come up in The Last Jedi in some capacity, saying her parentage is “something that is absolutely going to be addressed in the movie.” Are you looking forward to The Last Jedi?
